Artist Interview: Rapper and Entrepreneur Mike Smoove @mikesmoovemusic

mikesmoovemusic interview

Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with me! Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you do currently…

Well thanks for having me. They call me Mike Smoove. I am a single father, I run a company, and I’m also an artist. But the artistry is here, so as far as that I guess you could say I rap.

I would probably like to say I make music. I kinda wish I could sing sometimes, but I can experiment thanks to auto-tune.

Aside from that, I just have something to say and I find the best melodic way for me to say it at the moment. Usually comes out as me rapping. #Bars 😂

What inspired you to start creating your own music?

The same thing that inspires a person who paints to pick up a paintbrush, or a person to write a book, or cause a swimmer to want to jump in the water. It’s just something that calls you. Honestly, I tried to put it on the back burner (and I have) for years, because we know life makes other things take priority.

But I got tired of finding myself freestyling in the shower, the car, or just plain old missing making music. So I got tired of wanting something and not doing it. Then, I just started writing on my phone whenever I had free time. next thing you know, I have a handful of songs ready to go.

So I guess the lesson was: when you want something, stop WANTING it and start DOING.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

Honestly when I think about an achievement. It all has to do with personal satisfaction. So personally I feel good to say that I’ve done almost everything that most people who wanna be in this industry have done. I’ve made my own songs, written for others, done songs with people of other genres, performed in everything from clubs to large venues, been to award shows, opened for big named celebs, my music’s been in movies, you name it I’ve kinda checked a lot of boxes so to say. I just want people to hear the music. And it will be greater they hear it and fall in love with something about it.

What do you have planned for this year?

Not right now I just plan on devoting more time to music and creating more songs. I’m working on a mixtape with two other R&B artist right now Gabe and Sarrocco right now. three of us are putting ourselves together to come up with something for the people. Also I’m going to release an EP of my own music this year.

Who are the top 3 celebrities/artists you’d love to work with? And why?

Well if I’m going to aim, I am for the top. LOL when I think about working with people it’s nice to work with artist. But I would love to work with certain producers. I think it would be amazing to work with somebody like Kanye West. He’s not afraid to experiment and just go in whatever direction the music takes him and he’s really expressive. I like that a lot.

As far as artist I don’t have a specific person in mind, more so a type. I like working with R&B artists. I love making relationship music. I haven’t hardly done anything with female R&B artist yet. I definitely want to do more of that.

I also think it will be fun to do some crossover music. I’m down to collab with almost any artist that makes sense. Comparing me with another rap artists sounds great. However, I think it will be more challenging to do some thing crossover, like working with a popstar, country or rock artist, even someone overseas.

Take a moment to close your eyes. Where do you ideally see yourself in 5 year’s time?

In a perfect world, my business will be more self-sufficient without me so that I can devote a lot more time to music. Five years from now that would be fabulous to have more projects out and enough going on that I could be earning a full-time living off of music. And some acting will be dope too. I miss doing that as well.

Who or what is your greatest love?

It’s a gift and a curse, but I think it might be trying to please other people and give others love. I love being selfless.

Doing things for yourself and to pleasing yourself is great. However, when you elevate, you realize it’s not about you at all. That insight makes you want to do more for others than you do for yourself.

I guess what I’m saying is receiving love is great, but giving love is greater.

What book do you recommend most to others?

What book do I recommend? The story of your life. 😂

But I wanna remind you that it’s not done yet. And you can change how that story goes. It can be whatever you choose to make, whenever you chose to change it.

Can you give our readers 2 key tips for staying creative?

Two tips for staying creative? Hmmm… well first I would say I always look for inspiration and new things in everything all around you. Try to look at things in a different way and challenge your mind to be open and receive.

Secondly, I would say don’t forget to brainstorm and do it in a free-flowing manner. There’s no rules there’s no right or wrong. And jot things down. Use your phone. Open up your phone and jot something down when you’re feeling inspired. Capture that moment even if you don’t have time in your busy life to handle it at that moment you can always go back to it but capture that moment in the moment.

Where is your happy place?

I love nature. So I love being outside, especially near water. Also love just sitting in the car sometimes are going for rides. I’m a simple guy.

If you were stuck on a desert island and could only bring 3 things what would they be?

A machete – I’ve watched enough Naked and Afraid to know I need a machete.

My girl – I’m gonna want some company.

And a boat – I’m getting the hell off that island. 😂

How do you describe yourself in 5 words?

Intelligent, charismatic, funny, creative, & Smoove 😎
