President Donald Trump Threatens To Use Emergency Powers to Ban TikTok From US Citizens

President Donald Trump is serious about his threat to ban social media platform TikTok from U.S. operations.

On Friday (July 31), the president stated that he could use emergency economic powers or an executive order to ban the Chinese-owned company from the country as soon as Saturday, USA Today reports.

The government has been investigating the app as a potential national security risk and Trump has ordered ByteDance, the app’s parent company, to get out of its Chinese ownership.

Members of the U.S. Navy were also ordered to delete the app from government devices, and other government officials are banned from using the app on their devices as well.

The concert on national security is through the app’s ability to gain personal data from cell phones and smart devices. Many users found that the app was spying on them and shared it with other users online.

Earlier this week, there was also talk that Microsoft could be interested in acquiring TikTok.
